A stunning Italian 19th century verdigris patinated wrought iron, gilt and Scagliola center/dining table. The table is raised by a beautiful verdigris patinated wrought iron base with gilt accents, striking scrolled movements and lovely foliate designs. The rectangular Scagliola top displays superb arrays of wonderfully executed designs and movements throughout. At the center is a finely detailed reserve with personages gathered around Apollo in a horse drawn chariot with a charming winged cherub flying above holding a cornucopia in his hand. An outstanding and most decorative array of vivid colors lead outwards creating a faux marble feel. An exceptional scrolled foliate band extends along the border with intricately detailed cherubs and mythological creatures playing amidst rinceau shaped movements.
Scagliola (from the Italian scaglia, meaning “chips”), is a technique for producing architectural elements that resemble inlays of marble. The Scagliola technique came into fashion in 17th century Tuscany to mimic Pietra Dura works created for the Medici family in Florence. Scagliola includes natural pigments, imitating marble and other hard stones. The combination of materials and technique provides a complex texture, and richness of color not available in natural veined marbles.
