The Biedermeier era runs parallel to Romanticism and both are characterized by similar characteristics. Domesticity, closeness to nature, popular spirit and the need for harmony are the watchwords of this time. The focus is on the simple, conservative and tried and tested. There is little experimentation and more observation and enjoyment. The art style is very realistic and is very similar to photography. Idyllic domestic depictions, beautiful landscapes and impressive portraits were the most popular subjects for oil paintings until the end of the 19th century.
